i already posted a similar topic in the italian forum, so sorry if some of you read it for the second time
i was just wondering whether some norwegian guy could help me to figure out some things about EISCAT, maybe staalorm who's from Tromso. Probably also tef johs, being involved in norwegian chemist faculties, knows some interesting things about this station, although i think it's most physics and engineers working there.
i have a little "fetish" ( sounds so freaky ) regarding antennas and transmitter stations, especially big ones. i mean, i spent some years of my spare time walking around my hometown to find and catalogate all GSM base stations, so don't be surprised if i look at them as if they were a beautiful woman
something i find really fascinating are those ionospheric research sites, those who have heater facilities. the most famous example, as well object of many conspiracy bullshit, is HAARP, a site the US navy is running in the middle of alaskas forest. its actually the most powerfull ionospheric heater i know about, with some 3,6GW output power. of course there are some militar applications of HAARP that are really fascinating.
but, similar sites are located all over the world, also in europe. and, guess where? Tromso
the tromso facility is not a militar projects, the EISCAT association run it and in some way they are related to german max planck institute.
by the way, the official website is www.eiscat.no some pics ( including really nice aurora images ) can be found at www.stelab.nagoya-u.ac.jp/~kadachi/photo_gallery.html" target="_blank">http://www.stelab.nagoya-u.ac.jp/~kadachi/photo_gallery.html
EISCAT ( ) consists of three entities:
3 Incoherent Scatter Radar systems 1 Ionospheric Heater 1 Dynasonde
the incoherent scatter radars transmitt powerful signals to the ionosphere in order to analyse the return, from which characteristic of the ionospheric ions can be decoded ( right tef johs? sorry for my ignorance :-/ ). typically the output power of these systems equals to some GW, the captured echo is only of some picowatts. so huge transmission antennas ( typically more than 1000m2 ) and good hard- and software is needed.
but the best thing is the heating facility ( the last black&white picture ). with this antenna farm scientists can heat a small part of ionosphere and thus change some of its characteristics to study the reactions.
tromsos heating device operates with frequencies around 4-8 MHz, max. 1,2MW output.
what i was wondering about is whether some of you has more information on this beautiful site. maybe tef johs, since i think most norwegian universities "abuse" EISCAT
what do tromsos citizens think about this site? usually people living in the surrounding of such powerful devices are scared of possible adverse health effects or stuff like that. i read that tromsos university uses EISCAT too.
for those who know tromso ( staalorm ). as written on the official website EISCAT is located in Ramfjordmoen. do you know where this is?
i'm seriously thinking to visit EISCAT next winter, would definitely be interesting and i would probably also be able to see some beautiful northern lights since it's nothing military there should not be problems, and also if, i'm part of a german telecomunication ( mainly mobile phone ) association, so maybe some scientist who workes there takes half an hour of his time to show me the site. i hope so

you wondered where EISCAT is located... It is located about 25 kilometers from the city, I've made a little map for you, you can find it here: http://home.online.no/~odd-enil/tromsoregion.zip I've also marked where Kroken and Stordalstrand is, two important places for Lene-fans :) (the borders and the scaling are not 100% accurate)

Thank you artic!! Now I know where Stordalstrand is and I've seen that Tromso extends on both sides of the island (a city divided in three parts?)
Cannot control this... this thing called Lene |

Hi there Michael.
Funny you should mention EISCAT, when I was "much" younger :) I had quite a few trips out to Ramfjorden. At that time I was working in a technical company that supported home-equipment and other electronic systems. Over time we observed that households in the vicinity of the installations had a number of problems, similar to housing-areas affected by problems in mains electrical supply. Burned out power-supplies, TV-channel and antennae reception inadequacies, connector and receiver-malfuntions, exotic partfailures on mainboards, cabel-burnouts or resistance-variations etc. Sometime the errors were difficult to pinpoint and one TV-set from the same brand could react differently from another. A number of stories where told by the local people regarding this, also that the strength of how equipment were affected varied throughout the day and night.
>> what do tromsos citizens think about this site?
For the island of Tromsų it is not really an issue these days I think, perhaps at the time when they were built some people protested but I have no knowledge of that.
>> i'm seriously thinking to visit EISCAT next winter,
As you write while it is not a military area, some restrictions apply I guess for safety and proprietary technology reasons.
>> beautiful northern lights
Ahh, I got my load this christmas, you know it's important to talk friendly to the "nordlys" so that it doesn't get angry and give you misfortune :))
>> i'm part of a german telecomunication ( mainly mobile phone ) association, so maybe some scientist who workes there takes half an hour of his time to show me the site. i hope so
That might just be possible, I recommend that you contact someone at Tromsų University and ask for possible tours there. Maybe you could join on one of the student-study excursions :).
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Kind regards Staalorm

hi guys, thanks a lot for your replyies

great job, thx. I just visited your website, there are a lot of very nice pics are you from tromso too?

yeah i should have done so so what do you work now, are u an engineer?

oh very interesting i already thought there will have been such phenomenas, since it's a huge transmission power we're talking about.
by the way: did you ever hear of project sanguine? It's about the ELF transmitting site at Clam Lake in Wisconsin, Michigan where the US Navy began testing with ELF communication more than 30 years ago. The site has more than 28 miles of over-head signal transmission lines Since ELF ( extremely low frequencies ) is the best ( if not the only *g* ) way to communicate with deeply submerged submarines it has always been considered as esential to national defense. Well, in the surroundings of the clam lake site ( and there are quite a lot of people living there i guess ) for example all fences have to be grounded !!!
EISCAT or HAARP are not ELF transmitters, but they can be used to generate ELF signals by using the ionosphere as a virtual antenna. that's one of the main militar research porpuses i think.

so i'll pay great attention

hm good idea, probably that's the best path to take. reading on EISCATs website i saw that you can even sleep there, and you can choose whether to sleep at the radar or the heating site. damn, the only thing that scares me a little bit is temperature. i find it cold enough here in central germany these days... :-/
quote: Let me know if you have any other questions.
right now I'm too tired to have any questions going around my head but if'll have some i'll write you an email or a message here in the forum. thx
