Let me apologize for not being so active here, but since I don't have so much time, I rather spend it on the Italian forum.
Coming now to the topic, I'd rather avoid spending any time complaining on the image failure of Italian football in the last times, since it is evident, and in Portugal it has nothing but showed up to everybody. I'll just say, like many italians, that in my opinion the main responsible for this is, before the coach (who by the way has made tons of mistakes, starting from the pre-callings, not to mention the Korea world championships), the Italian Football Federation, which seems to be leading our country to a mass loss of reliability worldwide. The Federation President has even recently admitted that he did wrong two years ago not to substitute our coach Trapattoni, but the council has rejected his resignation... :s
Anyway, I'm not an expert about football, I'd just like to point out two things:
First, we played so as not to pass to the quarterfinals, and even in case we did, I'm so sceptic we could have gone any far. We even demonstrated not to have breath enough to run for ninety minutes, when we see the other teams are damn struggling even in the extra times... So, no way: our fault.
The second thing is about the Totti affair and the most predictable 2-2 in the history of football. Let me say, in spite of what many Italians may feel, that I wouldn't have wanted even in the probable following games a player that did what Totti has done, so maybe I would have sent him back to Italy right the evening when the story came out, because he had irreparably ruined his and Italy's image in these championships. What if Italy had come across Denmark again in the semifinals with Totti playing? I can imagine the rightful reactions of the Danish audience... But let me consider some particulars that made me think. One is the fact that almost the whole world had bet on the 2-2 for Denmark-Sweden; another thing is those writings that appeared before the match among the audience going like "2-2. Bye Italia, Spaghetti Out" (by the way, do I have to think that Italy is still seen over the world as the spaghetti-pizza-mandolino-mafia country? Let me hope not, please...) It seemed that even the public knew how the match would end, going so far as to do something I had never seen on an official match at these levels, that is keeping up toghether for the loss of another team not playing on the field (and God bless the rivalry between the two Scandinavian countries, though in the end it wasn't a bad match on the grass). Nonetheless, this "show" was aired a second time on the quaterfinal Sweden-Holland, with a giant Swedish T-Shirt with "Totti 2-2" written on it. This was the last straw: I don't see the point of answering to Totti's (one person's) seriously unsportsmanlike attitude with a mass attitude that, considering the fact that Italy had already come back home and that Totti did not even play against Sweden, was not so sportsmanlike. There was just no need of it.
So, am I excusing Italy? Absolutely not, I already said it was our fault that we didn't pass an exam that was within our possibilities. But if we are the deceived, some other is probably not seeing (or pretending not to) what every one knows. When someone who is the only one unaware of something about him is - ironicly - even damaged by the consequences, we say he is "Horned and thrashed". Well, in this case let me say to those going on with those "2-2" writings: "We thrashed, you horned"
Good luck for the rest of this European Championships, and let the best win!

Oh i think Greece deserved to win. They're a good team. Perhaps Portugal was good too, but i'm sure Greece couldn't have cheated.
Beckham... well to tell you the truth, i don't think Beckham is a really good player. Pardon me if you're his fan, but i don't really think he can play football that well.
