Posted - 19 Apr 2004 : 22:19:41 As you know, Lene wrote 2 lyrics -"Should It Matter" and "We Both Know"- for Sissel's album "All Good Things", which was published in Norway in November, 2000. Now, it's not sure if Lene wrote those lyrics after her withdrawal from the spotlight in February of the same year. But supposing it, as since last August we know some true reasons of her absence, the lyrics (especially of WBK) contain surprising meanings to which I obviously didn’t give much importance in the past. Only now that I’ve finally bought Sissel’s cd through Ebay and that I’ve listened to that songs and read again the lyrics after many time (before I had the tracks only on my PC, almost forgotten) I thought to open a topic, as I did in the Italian forum. To share some considerations with you and to open a discussion about those wonderful lyrics, in particular WBK, which have always been disregarded by the fans, unjustifiably (even if comprehensibly) if those really are the only things we have of Lene in her 3 years of total absence… but what things, her innest feelings!
So, read the text one time again and tell me if this isn’t a sort of autobiographical antecedent of “Disguise” and even prophetical lyrics (think of the obsessive journalists, of her paranoia, of her being always at home, of her sense of guilt and of her longing to come back):
The outside unknown feels so cold All you can think of is closing your eyes Hoping it's gone when they open But the feeling is still there
Your dreams can not change today Everything's familiar Everything's the same And you are sorry
We both know I will hear your laughter again I know how it feels When the shadows lie upon you
You wonder about life how it goes You've lost your directions long time ago Want to start it all over again Losing your patience, want to know when
Time finds you worthy one second chance Then you'll be ready - won't let it slip away
Pellissier, an Italian fan who analysed better the two lyrics, will open still more your eyes. We are the first ones who don’t love to do such operations on Lene’s lyrics, but you understand this is a justified exception, and if you agree with us, I will go even a bit further next time.
Even if the lyrics of WBK wouldn’t handle of this (there’s also a reference to someone loved and the title refers to 2 people), to me it’s a confirmation of Lene’s way of thinking and feeling, they show a sure faith in life which always offers a second chance, and show a strong self-knowledge. Transposed in what happened to her, that means she always knew one day she would have come back, that the right moment for the good and patient ones (she… and I think also we) would have come some day or other.

Here I am, sorry for the delay.
Basically I have seen lot of similarities among the two songs, so i decided to analyze them in a deeper way. I have found a path in common with the two songs, that path is past-present-future. Each element can be found in both songs, but we can see a clear difference of point of views, which made me thinks this: We Both Know could definitely be meant as an autobiographical antecedent of Disguise
We Both Know It's sad, describes a past plenty of sufference. But shows the hope. Hope for a new chance for the destiny to give, and for her to take. Let's see the path:
Past:
You've lost your directions long time ago
Present:
The outside unknown feels so cold All you can think of is closing your eyes
Future:
Time finds you worthy one second chance Then you'll be ready - won't let it slip away
Three elements, with this reading key: The past suddenly became black, the present is still black, the future , taking the chance that destiny will provide, will maybe be better.
In Disguise we have a sort of "autobiographical update" of Lene's situation, made years after and in a different state of mind. Now things are going better, the "chance from the destiny" has been taken. But the past is still remembered, with fear; there's the hope that such moments won't come back. No need to analyze the lyrics better here. The whole Disguise's lyrics talk about the dark past, the present is a sort of hymn to serenity and the future is seen with hope.
Past:
Have you ever felt some kind of emptiness inside... (and following lines)
Present:
I'm okay I really am now Just needed some time to figure things out
Future:
Not telling lies I'll be honest with you Still we don't know what's yet to come
Three elements here too, with the following Reading key: The past was black, present is fine, future.. be careful about it 'cause it hurted and could do it again....
That's just my opinion, anyway i see it all as autobiographical... then... who knows...
If you should ask then maybe they'd tell you what I would say True colours fly in blue and black Bruised silken sky and burning flag Colours crash, collide in blood shoot eyes..
If I could you know I would... If I could I would let it go....

Depression, perhaps, if we're to use that word. In November 2000, Lene still had a long way to go before "time found her worthy one second chance", as she writes.
I wanted to give this link to a partial live version of "We Both Know", sung by Sissel. You may listen to it using Realplayer by clicking on this link:
