4 ans après un premier album remarqué Playing My Games, la Norvégienne Lene Marlin nous revient avec Another Day, un opus plus mature, produit par l'éminent Mike Hedges. Rencontre avec la perle nordique...
Pourquoi avoir attendu 4 ans avant de sortir ce 2ème album?
Lene Marlin: "le premier album s'est vendu à 7 millions d'exemplaires, beaucoup plus que tout le monde le pensait. J'avais besoin de temps pour me relaxer et me poser en pensant à ce que j'allais faire. Dormir, se relaxer et faire d'autres trucs..."
Comment avez-vous rencontré le producteur Mike Hedges?
Lene Marlin: "c'est aussi pour ça que ça a pris du temps. On cherchait le bon producteur. Son nom a été cité. Je suis allée le rencontrer à Londres. La rencontre s'est bien passée. On s'est vu pour savoir si l'on pouvait faire quelque chose ensemble. On a passé une semaine ensemble avant de réaliser que ça fonctionnait. On s'est dit alors: faisons un album!"
Il a travaillé avec The Cure, U2 et Travis. Est-ce que vous écoutez ces groupes?
Lene Marlin: "oui, j'écoute Travis et U2. Mais je n'étais pas familier de ses travaux avant que je travaille avec lui. Pour les Cure, je suis née en 1980 donc... J'écoute plein d'autres artistes. J'aime bien Coldplay, U2, Jeff Buckley, David Gray, Tom McRae..."
Où avez-vous enregistré ce nouvel album?
Lene Marlin: "on l'a enregistré à Londres car les studios de Mike Hedges étaient à Londres. J'y suis allé pour enregistrer et j'ai fait de nombreux aller-retours entre Oslo et Londres. Ça a pris du temps... On a commencé à travailler en octobre 2002 et on a fini en juin."
Où trouvez-vous l'inspiration?
Lene Marlin: "dans la vie de tous les jours, les choses qui m'entourent, les choses que je lis, mes expériences personnelles... Certaines chansons peuvent effectivement parler de choses qui me sont arrivées. Mais, pour moi, c'est important que les gens ne sachent pas vraiment lesquelles parlent de moi. Seuls, mes amis savent. Je veux que les gens se fassent leur propres interprétations des chansons."
Vous écrivez beaucoup sur l'amour et l'amitié. Pourquoi est-ce un sujet qui vous tient tant à coeur?
Lene Marlin: "ça concerne tout le monde. C'est pourquoi j'écris la-dessus: l'amour, l'amitié, l'espoir. Ce sont des choses qui nous touchent tous. J'ai 23 ans. Pour moi, c'est très important que, quelqu'un qui écoute mes chansons, qu'il ait 15, 25 ou 40 ans, me dise: "je sais de quoi vous parlez"...
Comment vous viennent vos chansons?
Lene Marlin: "ça dépend. Parfois, les paroles arrivent avant la musique. Parfois, c'est le contraire. Parfois, les deux arrivent en même temps. Tout dépend de mon inspiration. Mike Hedges a vraiment compris ce que je voulais. Quand j'écris une chanson, j'aime que les émotions qui s'en dégagent soient retranscrites fidèlement lors de l'enregistrement. Même en rajoutant des arrangements, c'est important que l'émotion reste la même. Et ça c'est très bien passé grâce à Mike."
Est-ce que votre vision de l'industrie du disque a évolué maintenant que vous en faite partie?
Lene Marlin: "quand j'ai enregistré mon 1er album, j'avais 17 ans. Il y a une grande différence maintenant car j'en connais plus sur le business et j'en connais aussi plus sur moi-même."
Est-ce que ça ressemble à ce que vous imaginiez il y a 5 ans?
Lene Marlin: "je n'imaginais pas grand chose à l'époque. Je n'avais aucune idée de comment ça serait à l'époque où j'ai sorti mon 1er album. Je pensais que l'album ne sortirait qu'en Norvège donc, quand ça a marché, je me suis dis que c'était juste cool. Je n'avais pas l'ambition de vendre beaucoup d'albums."
Est-ce que vous portez une attention particulière à votre image?
Lene Marlin: "j'ai toujours voulu paraître moi-même, porter ce que j'avais envie. C'est très important pour moi."
Est-ce que vous savez ce que vous auriez fait si vous n'aviez pas percé dans ce métier?
Lene Marlin: "j'aurais sûrement fini d'aller à l'école, pris une année pour savoir ce que je voulais faire et aller ensuite à l'université, une fois que j'aurais su ce que je voulais étudier."
Avez-vous un plan de carrière?
Lene Marlin: "c'est dur d'en avoir. On verra dans le futur. Je veux juste profiter de cet album et m'amuser. C'est dur de prédire ce qui va se passer. J'espère que je pourrais déjà faire un 3ème album..."

Why have you wait 4 years to realised this 2nd album ?
"Debut album was sold at 7 million (lolll more exactly 1.7 ) copies,much more that all people
thought.I needed time to relax me and to think on what I will go to do.Sleep,relax and do another things ...."
How did you meet Mike Hedges ?
"It's also for that it was long.We look for the good producter.His name was quoted.I went to meet him in London.The meet was good.We saw one another to see if we can do something together.We lived one week together before realised it's doing well.Then we told to us:doing an album."
He worked with The Cure, U2 and Travis.Do you listen this group ?
"Yes, I listen Travis and U2.But ,I didn't know anything about his work's method befor work with him.To The Cure ,I born in 1980 so ...I listen a lot of another artist.I like Coldplay,U2,Jeff Buckley,David Gray,Torn McRae..."
Where did you record this new album ?
"We recorded it in London 'cause Mike Hedges's studios were at London.I went (in Mike's studio's) to record and I did a lot of returns between Oslo and London.It take lot of time...We 've begining in october 2002 and we finished in june."
Where do you take your inspiration ?
in the life of all days,my reading, my experience...Some song could be about things whose happened to me.But to me ,it's important that people don't know whats song speak about me.Only my friends know.I want that people do their own song's interpretation ."
You write a lot about love and friendship.Why is it so important to you ?
it's a subject who concern everybody.it's why I write about this:love,freindship,hope.This feelingS affect all the people.I'm 23 years old.It's important to me that,someone who listen my songs,and who is 15,25 or 40 years old tell me : I know what you speak about
How come from your songs to you ?
It depends.Sometimes,lyrics comes before music.Sometimes it's the music before the lyrics.And sometimes the both in same time.All depend of my inspiration.Mike Hedges really understand what I wanted.When I write a song ,I like when song's emotion is
retranscribed faithfully during recording.Even if we add agreement it's important that the emotion stay the same .And that is spend well thanks to Mike
Did your vision of the industry of the disc evolve now that you been a part?
"When I recorded PMG I was 17.There is a big difference now 'cause I know more about business and also about me"
Does that look like that you imagine 5 years ago?
I didn't imagine a lot of thing at this period.I didn't have any ideas about how it would be at this period ,when i realised my firs album.I thought that PMG would only be realised in Norway so when business was doing well I just said to myself that is cool.I didn't have ambitious to sold a lot of albums.
Do you pay a particular attention on your image?
I've always want to appear myself.Wear what i want.It's important to me.
Do you know what you would have done if you had not leaked out in this profession?
I certainly finish my studies,take a year to Know what I wanted to do and then go to University when I would have know what I wanted to do.
Have you a career plan ?
It's hard to have it.We will see in the future.I just want to take advantage of this album and have fun.It's hard to predict what is going to take place. I hope that I could do a third album...
